Planet Valdez

The world of Valdez is a small outpost on the fringe of Segmentum Tempestus. Hardly considered a prosperous world, it had eked out a meagre existence as a source of base commodities.

Valdez was garrisoned by a local militia recruited from those inhabitants who aspired to more than the backbreaking life in one of the many mines. At full strength the militia numbered an understrength regiment poorly equiped and equally poorly led. Such a force would offer an invader little resistance but was sufficient to keep the civilian populace in line.

The few individually wealthy citizens gathered around the capital city of Boenvasse. Here you could find some measure of comforts, although even these were sparce by Imperial standards. From here that the planet was governed by a citizens council presided over by Governor Emil Fabilan.

The planets existence seemed destined to be largely uneventful, life going on one harsh day at a time.

Disaster Strikes

All that changed a year ago. Something malicious stirred to the north of Orcalist, the capital city of Valdez. Outlying Mining camps were attacked, their radio transmissions vanishing from the airwaves. Governor Fabilan dispatched the militia to investigate, and in all cases found the miners eradicated with a cold blooded precision. Of the enemy there was no sign.

The attacks began to escalate as this unknown foe began to become bolder. Disturbed, Fabilan ordered the 2nd Battalion to scour the hills north of Baer Ransiur. At first the patrol was uneventful, locating nothing more terrifying than wild birds. As the Battalion returned to Baer Ransuir, they were ambushed by an overwhelming force and destroyed.

Relief

Governor Fabilan immediately called for help, and his call was answered by the Dark Angels. They dispatched a force consisting of half the 5th Company to Valdez. The Dark Angels were tasked with discovering what was responsible for these attacks, and restore order on the planet.

The campaign opens immediately following the arrival of the Dark Angels onto Valdez as they begin to explore the ruins of Baer Ransiur.
